All brained.
The left brain, right brain theory is flawed. It may have some anatomical grounding, but it is misunderstood and encourages people to polarize themselves as either entirely right brained or entirely left brained. It makes programmers think they can't paint, and makes painters think they can't program. Lets all use the best part of our brain: all of it.
What made you "brain" that to the table?
ReplyDeleteI agree, I only wish there was as much of a demand for musically minded programmers as there is for visually artistic programmers.
ReplyDeleteIt's too easy to categorize ourselves, we like to think we fit in some nice little picture. There are too many people with untapped potential that think they only fit a few pixels when they could truly fill a canvas.
ReplyDeleteI just watched The Search For Bobby Fischer last night, and one thing that was really brought to my attention is that the main character of the movie was so well rounded in his activities. He was amazing at chess, but he also loved playing sports and other things. I think a lot of our self branding is caused by failure to try new things and explore ourselves.
ReplyDeleteI agree! You don't know how many times I've told myself I couldn't draw or be artistic because I just never tried. I never tried, of course, because I didn't think I was good.
ReplyDeleteI think part of the problem is that we humans suck at thinking of things in balances. We have to be all left-brained, or all right-brained: we don't easily think of ourselves as 40% left-brained and 60% right. I think it's worth recognizing that people have tendencies...if we can remember that tendencies are not absolutes, and don't have to determine who we are.
